How do I create influence? I get this question all the time, maybe not somebody coming to me and saying, “How do you create influence?” But how do you build a personal brand? How do you get more engagement? These are all great questions, and I want to talk about them today.
A lot of times people have great fear around doing Facebook live, and you guys, I get it. I’m coming to you today to hopefully inspire you a little bit. If you are new to me and this blog, I’ve been in the network marketing space since 2012. I’ve created over seven figures inside of network marketing. Two years ago, I transitioned into a new company, started completely from scratch, you guys. Completely. My team didn’t come with me. I couldn’t take them. And and it wouldn’t have been right…
I completely started over, and I went to the top of the company in a year. How? Because I created influence. I created a brand. And I’m going to share with you these really simple, simple, simple steps today.
I’m going to give you 5 distinct ways YOU can create influence.
So listen, you hear this term, that goes around and says celebrity brand, celebrity influencer. And I’m going to be honest with you guys, I don’t do what I do to become a celebrity. I don’t walk on stages to become a celebrity. I’ve spoken on many stages. I’ve been honored to be asked to speak on stages, but I don’t want a speaking career because I don’t want to travel around the world. I’m a mom. I have two boys. I am very, very, very busy. I have a couple businesses, and I don’t really want to fly around the world speaking. We have so much amazing technology to communicate with one another.
Building a celebrity brand doesn’t have to be speaking under hot lights on stages…
It was never in my mission. It was never in my purpose. Basically, when I started my business online, it was just, “Hey, I have something to share.” I’ve learned some things in network marketing and I’m now learning some things about building an online business and online brand. So I’m going to share it with you today!

#1 Show People They Matter
Let’s get to it. Number one, let’s just wipe away celebrity and brand. Let’s just talk about influence. It matters to show people that they matter. That is number one. It matters to show people that they matter, because People want to be seen. I see you. I know you have fear of putting yourself out there. I know you have a fear of being judged. I know you have a fear around doing Facebook live because what if you screw up? I know you have a fear of success. I know you have a fear of losing. I GET YOU.
The way that you start to develop an influence is to show people that they matter. And you guys, listen to me. Humans crave genuine connection.
They want to know that they are being seen, they want to know that they are being heard.
And I know you’re hearing all this other crazy advice out there. But honestly, that for me is what helped to really grow this following. Because everyone that messaged me on my fan page when I was getting started out, I messaged back. Everyone that was messaging me underneath my videos, I was taking the the time and replying back to every single one of them.
It formed this true connection and created true followers. So spend time to nurture those relationships, too. This whole online world is about collaborating and raising one another up. Don’t just be like, “I’m in it to win it. Just for myself.” Because you’re never gonna get anywhere.
#2 Embrace Micro Influence
The second one is, “Embrace the concept of a micro influence.” Micro. What does that mean? Now it’s not always about the number of followers you have, like I discussed earlier. When you create this micro influence, you can have maybe 5,000 followers. So you don’t have the 200,000, 300,000, 500,000 whatever million followers, like Gary V does or Charlene Johnson, but there’s a niche and then there’s a micro in a niche, and that niche might only have 5,000 followers. But guess what? When you are in a micro niche, you actually get two to three times more engagement. Read that again… two to three times more engagement.
A couple of years ago when I was just getting started, Bob Heilig, told me about this article called 1000 True Fans, and if you follow Bob, I’m sure he talks about it all the time. This article was talking about how you can literally build a million dollar business with a thousand people. So let’s put that into context. There’s eight billion people, just in the U.S. alone, (I think). Maybe not. Maybe it’s global. I’m not a stats person. I should probably know this. But out of eight billion people, do you think you could find a thousand true fans and true followers?
Micro influencers are huge. Everyone thinks they need to have these huge followings. You guys, you don’t, so feel good about that. Just figure out, what is that niche? Maybe you’re in health and wellness, but you work with a really specific core group. I’m 42, so let’s say I’m a health and wellness expert and a fitness expert. I micro niche my audience from 40 to 49. That’s it. And I help people, women specifically, and that micro niches it down even more. Not even men. I ONLY help women in their 40s feel amazing and like they’re in the prime of their life. I help them to age backwards. I help them to get more fit than they were in their 20s. You micro niche. That’s a micro niche, guys. All right, so that’s a niche in the micro influence, and that leads us to number three.
#3 The Riches are in the Niches
There’s a saying out there that says, “The riches are in the niches, bitches.” I don’t know if you’ve ever heard it, but there are eight billion people in this world, so you want to really micro niche it down. Maybe you are a chef. I don’t cook. Let me say this. I’m a mom. I’m a mompreneur. I have a home based business, and let’s say that I found a way to create really healthy meals for my family with five ingredients or less. So I develop this online show through utilizing Facebook live where I do a demonstration every single Wednesday which shows people how to make these healthy meals.

My audience knows that Julie’s going to show up, she’s going to show us what she’s making the family for dinner today, and I’m going to tune in because that live helps ME make dinner for MY family. You guys, doing demonstrations are some of the best lives (And doing interviews because it takes the pressure off you). Focus on a niche. I used to be the one that said, “You don’t need a niche. You don’t need a niche.” And ya know? You DO need a niche. Because if you don’t niche down, you start confusing your audience.
#4 Vulnerability Builds Connection
Now, number four is vulnerability. People want to know you. People want to hear your story. People want to connect with you through your story. You want to be relatable. The thing I’m talking about today is showing up (even when you don’t feel like it). I’m kind of a hot mess today (See video for proof). I got my kids off to school, I’m doing some work, but I’m not feeling the best. I’m blowing my nose. I’m holding a Kleenex in my video, but who cares? I just wanted to make sure I’m showing up for my audience and giving you guys this bit of information that has helped me to grow exponentially in my business and my brand. And, it’s really, really simple.
I don’t like to necessarily use the term celebrity because that’s not what I’m set out to be. Maybe you feel like you want to be a celebrity, but for me, that is not it. I get a little bit turned off by that word to be honest. So for me, it’s about meeting people. I get so many messages after people see my Facebook lives and it’s heartwarming and it’s heartfelt.
And then I have these people that say to me, “Well my story is boring. I’ve never done anything interesting and I don’t have anything interesting to say.” And you guys, yes you do! Everyone has a story within them. Everyone has probably a thousand stories within them. Sometimes you need to sit down and brain dump what those stories are so you can share them with people.
“People love stories, and they need to see themselves in your story. So share it!”
I know there is this whole vulnerability era that is emerging more and more, which is great, but there’s still a lot of people that are very nervous to share certain parts of their story. The reason I’ve been successful is that I’ve never shied away from sharing the ugly parts of my story. I’ve always been an open book. And I know it’s easier for some over others. I get it. But the more you do it, the more you feel confident and comfortable. Also two very important words right there: comfortable and confident.
#5 Consistency is Key
All right. And then number five is consistency. Show up. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither is online influence. No influencer, has built their brand, their business and their influence overnight. Nobody. So let’s take the pressure off and let’s work on developing out a content plan to make sure that you stay on track.
Facebook live is the best way to be seen and heard. It hits all three ways that people learn. It’s great. Facebook live, it’s huge. But if you’re not consistently showing up, (and you guys, it doesn’t have to be everyday) people won’t know where, when or how to make this connection with you. You do NOT need to do a live every single day.
However, I did do a live challenge to break me out of my comfort zone, and it helped tremendously. It takes 21 days to develop a habit. I didn’t do a live at all last week, and I felt out of touch coming back to it. It was really weird, and I almost didn’t do a live this week because of that feeling. And then I’m like, “No, I need to do it. I need to stop. Who cares if I feel crappy? Just do it.” It’s five or ten minutes.
Consistency is key because people want to know that you’re there. And don’t try to half ass all the things. Really show up for them.

An extremely important takeaway from all of this is that it takes time, commitment and vulnerability to create a personal brand and online influence. Make your audience the priority, focus on building a micro niche, fine tune your messaging and voice to your niche, be vulnerable and connect with people through story telling, and lastly, be consistent.
